“A Mountain Farewell”

Over the last 12 years and 30 releases, Deafest has taken many forms, styles, members, and instruments, but one thing has remained constant: the support from the fans. As Deafest draws to a close, and other projects begin, I can only look back on the years with extreme fondness. Hearing that some of my music made a small difference in someone’s day or some sort of connection without even using words means everything to me. I’ve met many lifelong friends through the band, so it left me musically and socially fulfilled.

I started the band in college as a different version of myself. Now, after multiple jobs, multiple moves, getting married, raising pets, and raising two kids, I find myself with similar yet slightly tangential passions and motivations. Deafest as a project seems to have completed. I set out to make black metal about the beautiful Rocky Mountains and now other bands are doing it much better than I ever could. They will climb that next mountain, they will bask in glorious alpenglow, they will trudge from cairn to cairn, they will battle high winds on the ridges, and they will make songs of vast mountainous landscapes from the summits.

Through all the years I’ve tried to keep Deafest honest. In that spirit I give you the final Deafest release. It was recorded in one take, with one mic, and, somehow, on the first take. It’s not perfect, but no good-bye is ever perfect. There’s always room for more to be said. And for those fans that always asked me to play live, well, this is pretty much live. This is how I would play if I were in front of you. Over the last 6 months I had planned a much longer composition, but after much trimming to leave only my absolute favorite sections I ended up with this: “A Mountain Farewell”. I really hope you enjoy it, and one final time thank you for all your support.
